A vague research question produces a vague thesis. Learn the characteristics of strong research questions and the common pitfalls that derail projects before they begin.

The research question is the single most important sentence in your thesis. It determines your methodology, your data collection, your analysis, and your conclusions. Get it wrong, and no amount of elegant writing or sophisticated analysis can save you. Get it right, and everything else follows naturally.
A strong research question has three qualities: it is specific, it is answerable, and it is significant. Specific means it identifies a clear phenomenon, population, and context. Answerable means it can be addressed with the data and methods available to you within your timeframe. Significant means it contributes to existing knowledge or addresses a real-world problem.
The most common mistake is writing a question that is too broad. "What is the impact of climate change on agriculture?" is not a research question — it is a field of study. A better version narrows the scope: "How do smallholder farmers in coastal Bangladesh adapt to salinity intrusion caused by sea-level rise?" This question specifies the phenomenon (adaptation to salinity intrusion), the population (smallholder farmers), and the context (coastal Bangladesh).
Another common mistake is writing a question that is answerable only with data you cannot obtain. "How do voters feel about electoral reform?" requires a nationally representative survey, which is beyond the scope of most master's theses. A more realistic version might use focus groups with a specific community: "How do first-time voters in Dhaka perceive the effectiveness of electronic voting machines?"
Avoid yes/no questions. Questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no tend to produce shallow analyses. Instead of asking "Does social media affect academic performance?", ask "In what ways does social media use influence the study habits of undergraduate students at the University of Dhaka?" The first question leads to a binary answer. The second opens up a rich, qualitative exploration.
Use the right question type for your methodology. Quantitative research questions often begin with "What is the relationship between..." or "What is the effect of..." and are tested with statistical analysis. Qualitative research questions often begin with "How" or "What" and explore processes, experiences, or meanings. Mixed methods research may include both types. Matching your question to your methodological approach is essential for coherence.
Align your questions with your objectives. Each research question should correspond to a specific research objective, and each objective should map to a specific part of your methodology and results chapters. This alignment is what examiners look for when evaluating the internal consistency of your thesis. A misalignment — for example, a research question that your methodology does not actually address — is a red flag.
Test your question on your supervisor and at least two peers. If they cannot tell you what data you would need to collect or what analysis you would perform, your question is not clear enough. Revise until someone outside your field can understand what you are trying to study and why.
Finally, be prepared to refine your question as your research progresses. It is normal for research questions to evolve as you engage with the literature and collect data. What is not acceptable is reaching your final chapter and realizing your question no longer matches what you actually studied. Keep your question visible — tape it to your desk, pin it to your screen — and check it against your work regularly.
